Learning of Stacee's upcoming concert, Patricia Whitmore ( Catherine Zeta-Jones), the conservative wife of mayor Mike Whitmore ( Bryan Cranston), organizes a protest in front of the club ("Hit Me with Your Best Shot")ĭrew and Sherrie have their first date at the Hollywood Sign, where Drew reveals he is writing a song for Sherrie ("Don't Stop Believin' "). In 1987 Los Angeles, Sherrie Christian ( Julianne Hough) arrives from Oklahoma with dreams of becoming a singer. The related film soundtrack also did critically well, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top Soundtracks chart. However, Cruise was particularly lauded for his performance of " Pour Some Sugar on Me" and " Wanted Dead or Alive".
The film received mixed critical reviews and grossed only $59 million worldwide. Originally scheduled to enter production in summer 2009 for a 2011 release, it eventually commenced production in May 2011 and was released on June 15, 2012. Blige, Bryan Cranston and Tom Cruise, the film features the music of many 1980s rock and Glam Metal artists including Def Leppard, Journey, Scorpions, Poison, Foreigner, Guns N' Roses, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Whitesnake, REO Speedwagon, and others. Starring Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta in his film debut leading an ensemble cast that includes Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Åkerman, Mary J. He can slither, he can seduce, and he can sing! (He's almost too good, actually. Cruise, no surprise, commits entirely to the enterprise. As Stacee Jaxx, a mysterious, nebulous rock star oozing with sex appeal who's lost in the bounty of fame (but may want more), he's seriously appealing. So before you know it, you're (sort of) won over. And most of the performances are winning. But the music ("Pour Some Sugar on Me," "I Can't Fight This Feeling") is eminently sing-able.
To start, it's campy, and the translation from Broadway to the screen can be awkward.
It's all about managing expectations: Don't enter the theater expecting a profoundly moving experience, a la Billy Elliot. You'll initially wonder whether you're in for a hokey cheese-fest that will have you feeling sorry for all of the big names who've signed up for this endeavor (that opening scene on the bus incites giggles, and not in a good way). ROCK OF AGES is an entertaining romp through 1980s rock, as long as you can overlook the first uncomfortable 15 minutes.
